We have designed every major component to be repairable rather than replacing.
Titanium coated handle
Designed for elegance and function, the handle mates with the lid to provide a flush and recessed aesthetic facilitating a natural feel when drinking. The Handle has recesses to allow you to unlock and quick release the shaft from the piston without interrupting the brew stop mechanism. These same recesses allow you to reattach. Significant thought has gone into form factor maintaining the sleek integration of mating parts.
Brass shaft
Brass has been selected for its natural antibacterial properties as well as its warmth and beauty. Brass also has some natural lubricating properties to allow easy connection and disconnection of the shaft to the piston. The connection is made possible by a triple start thread. This may seem minor but the engineering function this provides for the design intent is significant. 1 revolution connects or disconnects where a typical thread would require approximately 4 revolutions. Another advantage of multi-start threads is their resistance to cross threading. Finally the breaking force is very low due to the higher pitch, this means that we have balanced the seal friction against the glass with the force required to break the thread. All planned and all precise – no accident
Piston Plunger
The simplicity in this component was the real achievement. Sized for exact sealing against the wall of the glass to avoid any escaped grind or sediment the tolerances on this component were critical to get right. Made from a toughened alloy steel with titanium PVD coating ensures durability and stability. Selection of umbrella values to control the flow facilitated easy cleaning and maintenance. Minimal moving parts, self cleaning, temperature resistance, hygienic and FDA approved materials meant that submerging it in boiling water presented zero risk for plastic leaching or any other nasties. Your health and convenience was the real priority.
Piston Stabilizer
This component prevents the piston from rotating and breaking the seal. Again critical to the function when releasing the shaft and drinking from the cup without the lid. The Piston stabilizer is made from alloy steel coated in titanium PVD. The connection is made by the same mode as the shaft sharing a common thread. Easy to connect and disconnect, impossible to cross thread. Convent and functional.
Stainless steel laser cut filter
Extensive testing identified optimal size of filter aperture and thickness of stainless steel plate. Made from surgical grade stainless steel 316 laser etched provides perfect apertures with no flashing. Each component has been considered a product and extensive prototyping and research has gone into P80 size distribution through the filter at a range of grind size. This was an interesting and surprising part of the product development as the filter plays such a significant role on the flavour profile.
Umbrella valve set
These valves have been designed to ensure the breaking pressure at static and certain dynamic loading conditions doesn’t allow the escape of over brewed liquid from the ‘dirty’ side of the piston.
The umbrella valve has been optimized for the viscosities seen in tea and coffee with many principles from fluid dynamics taken into account when designing the thickness and hardness of the valves as well as how liquid would flow through.
These valves are designed to be removed easily without damaging them multiple times if a deep clean is required without having to buy new valves. However if you do damage or loose any valves you can repair rather than replace.
Piston and Lid Seal
These seals are interchangeable so in the worst case if the piston seal breaks you can use the lid seal while you wait for your replacement. Made from a FDA approved silicon these seals don’t release microplastics and are mold resistant.
If you have a Yeti, you can also borrow your Yeti seal and it will work temporarily or if you loose your Yeti cup seal, our seals will fit the 70mm lids. You don’t need to buy a full lid from Yeti anymore.
360 degree anti spill drinking seal
Made from same food grade FDA approved mold resistant silicon, the anti spill seal is easy to replace.
Shaft Seal
Made from same food grade FDA approved mold resistant silicon, the shaft seal snaps in and out with ease.
Tritan Base lid
The base lid looks simple but there are design features to provide tactile feedback that was not easy to achieve. With a inclined track and snap fit indents, these features all work together to provide function and form. Minimal parts means cleaning is easy and there are no crevices for grime to accumulate.

Tritan Top lid
The top lid is a complex surface made to mate with the base and the handle, facilitate the 360 degree drinking and sealing as well as control the flow of the beverage so it doesn’t come out too fast or too slow. There were so many configurations of this part to tune and make sure it worked in with the base, handle and shaft.

Tritan Lid Assembly
When the Base and lid are combined it forms the assembly. As a pair they work to deliver the beverage to your mouth with comfort and familiarity. It was essential that the product felt right on your lips, no sharp edges, no lining up little mouth holes, no slurping or residual left over. Even the height and profile of the edge has been designed with 0.2mm precision.
The height of the profile fits the ergonomics of most faces, and we tested it on a lot of faces…
Fluid dynamics were modeled to ensure the liquid breaks off the edge and doesn’t drip down the body of the cup. Again not by accident but serving you with convenience.
Piston plunger assembly
The real hero of the product, the core of the design and the real innovation. With the 2 opposing valves you can control when you want your brew to stop and in the case of tea, you can even change the flavour profile if you want it stronger.
Borosilicate drinking Glass
Made from lead free virgin materials, the glasses are hand blown with precision by artisans. Borosilicate is the same glass used in lab equipment but we have increased the thickness to improve toughness. With dimensions critical to function we have added a level of quality control and a process of manufacturing new to the industry.
The glass volume has been calculated based on a medium 12oz coffee or tea. Sized for a 18-21g coffee shot (which is the industry standard). The dimensions of the piston and shaft have been precisely designed to minimize the amount of brewed liquid trapped on the dirty side of the piston, achieve 12oz of brewed gold but still allow the handle to mate keeping it flush with the lid when drinking.
The diameter of the cup is familiar and very close to that of a beer or soda can. The added benefit of this familiar and common form factor means that the GROUNDD cup will fit in virtually every vehicle cup holder
Walnut Hand Protector

This reinforces our connection with the earth and we thought it was a nice way to connect with the cup both literally and metaphorically.
